Facts about Swami Vivekananda


Swami Vivekananda was an Indian monk He is famous for spreading awareness among Hindutva and giving knowledge of Yoga and Vedanta to Western countries. Today,let us know some interesting facts in this article about him.

1- Swami Vivekananda's childhood name was Narendranath Dutta. He was born on 12 January 1863 in the Bengali family of Calcutta. At that time India was ruled by the British and Calcutta was the capital of India at that time.


2- His father Vishwanath Datta used to work in the Calcutta High Court and his mother was a homemaker.

3- Vivekananda was an ordinary child but he was very much interested in reading. He was very interested in the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagvat Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas.


4- Narendra used to study Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Institute. He later passed the entrance examination from Presidency College. He also practiced Western History and Western Philosophy from the Scottish Church College. In 1884, he completed his Bachelor's degree.


5- Later Vivekananda became a member of the Brahma Samaj and started searching for ways to get God.

6- Vivekananda always asks people about their God and religion, but the reply of any person cannot satisfy him. He got his answer from Ramakrishna. For the first time in November 1881 he met Swami Ramkrishna. And this was also the turning point of his life. From then on, he considered Ramakrishna as his guru.

7- Ramkrishna died on August 16, 1886. Ramkrishna had taught Vivekananda that serving people is more than worshiping God.

8- After Ramkrishna's death, Vivekananda took Ramakrishna's responsibilia his head. He moved his monastery to Baranagar. In 1899, the monastery of Baranagar was transferred to Belur. And now that monastery is also known as Belur Math.

9- The name of Vivekananda from Narendranath was given to him by Maharaja Ajit Singh of Khetri.

10- In 1888, Vivekananda started touring India. By 5 years they kept wandering across India and living with different types of people in India.

11- Vivekananda went to Chicago in July 1893. At that time, the World All Religions Convention was organized. But for some reason they were not given the opportunity to speak first. But after some time, with the help of Professor John Henry he got an opportunity to speak.

12- In the conference of World Religions on 11 September 1893, he delivered his first speech on Hinduism. He started his speech with "Sister and Brothers of America" As soon as they heard this, all the people present there stood up for him and started clapping. At that time almost 7 thousand people had gathered.

13- After Chicago's speech, he gave a lot of speeches around the world and met with a lot of people. Such as Sister Nivedita, Max Muller, Paul Ducsen etc.

14- In 1897, he returned to India. He also gave a lot of speeches in India too. He used to give a speech on social issues too. At that time, his speeches had great impact on leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose.

15- On May 1, 1897, he founded the Ramakrishna Mission.

16- Despite having a bad condition in 1899, he traveled south. During this visit, he founded the Vedanta Society in San Francisco and New York and established Shanti  Ashram in California.


17- He has written a lot of books - Karma Yoga (1896), Raj Yoga (1896), Vedant Shastra (1896), Kalombo to Almora Speech (1897), Bhakti Yoga etc.


18- Swami Vivekananda died at the Belur Math at the age of 39 on 4 July 1902. His birthday is celebrated in India as National Youth Day.
